Wildflowers by ClintCearley Wildflowers by ClintCearley
PRINT available here!

Visited family over the weekend and my grandmother had bought a 30x40" canvas for me to paint something on so she could hang it over her fireplace. She wanted something colorful for the spring and summer so we looked through pics she had taken of flowers around the house.
Had fun working loosely with the brightest colors in my palette :)

what kind of pastel did you use?

They are Rembrandt soft pastels. Since the canvas had a LOT of tooth and would have taken forever covering it normally I used acetone on a brush to moisten the pastel so I could briefly paint with it and tone the surface. Unlike water, acetone dries within seconds so you can go back over it very quickly.
Rembrandts are the best all-around soft pastel, there are some better like Sennelier (sp?) but the difference in price isn't worth it most of the time. Stay away from anything with the word "Student" on it as they have half the pigment and twice the binder.

Though seems to be drawn with loose big strokes, it's really detailed in the places where it needs to. Your technique with pastels and your vision are both awesome.

I completely agree with the DD comment. There's something about authentic, traditionally done pieces that just give you that warm, happy feeling. This is especially true for this piece, as the colors and flowers are so bright and lively! And I especially agree with the DD comment with regards to the brushstrokes, as they really add that special feeling to the painting. I truly love pieces like this, especially when they make me happy and think of warm summer days. :aww:
