The Naiads by ClintCearley The Naiads by ClintCearley
The characters are naiads, the fresh water sisters to nymphs. I wanted them young and beautiful but also give a subtle dark undertone. Unlike nymphs who were by and large altruistic creatures, naiads were just as likely to drown you as help you.

Created with Adobe Photoshop CS4

UPDATE:
The piece was included in Spectrum 17: The Best of Contemporary Fantastic Art.
WordsofWinter wrote a wonderful poem inspired by the piece which can be read here.

Yes it's already a popular submission, but there's no way I can pass up featuring this awe-inspiring painting. The Naiads by *Damascus5 ( Suggested by Hellobaby and Featured by Narfmaster )

It can be argued then that the naiads were the equal and opposite of the nymphs?

I've long enjoyed this one, but hadn't realized it had ended up as a DD, a Spectrum piece, AND a poet's inspiration. Congratulations!

This is lovely! My only critique is that the black sclera on the focal naiad are so arresting and interesting that the whites on the others' eyes is a little jarring- is she meant to be more openly supernatural? Gorgeous work.

Aren't Water Nymphs and Naiads the same exact creatures just different names, or are you just talking about all Nymphs together in general?

Wow, this is amazing ! Looks like a Pre-Raphaelite painting. When I saw the thumbnail I thought it was the work of John William Waterhouse... The colours, composition and the eerie black eyes of the blond naiad are just perfect. :+fav:

Amazing art!

Actually, other way around. Nymphs were freshwater, naiads were the daughters of Amphithrite and Poseidon.

You must have read different material on Naiads and Nymphs than I did, they do differ when it comes to mythology.

first thought it's like a "no-no-no, girls, i'll never come closer to you"
but then you starting watch closer, longer and longer and you already cannot go away
and then "hmm, i know that it looks dangerous but i feel need to join you there in water .. and that snake, i want to feel it.. oh, yes and other girls, you look so nice and water looks so warm, i'm pretty sure that if i will dive there there will nothing happen...."
